Essential Supervisory & Managerial Skills

“Managing Others” … these are two words that often drive fear deep into the hearts of a newly appointed supervisor, yes?

Part of the puzzle is that as a new supervisor, we may not quite know what “Management” truly is. Yes, we’ve seen other managers in-play, and may have a rough idea about what it entails. Yet, we haven’t seen their full playbook, so it’s a little too early for us to build a more complete picture in our minds, isn’t it?

We know that Supervision is a two-sided coin; one side relating to “Tasks”, the other to “People”. We also know that dealing with the softer side of Others can sometimes be tricky, especially when they operate from a position of confidence, and we lack the essential requisites. Why should Others listen to us?

Yet, life goes on whilst we balance these two competing aspects; there are still jobs to complete, and now we also have responsibilities going well beyond simple tasks! We’ve suddenly become accountable for additional resources; team members, budgets, vendors, and, customers!

There is something psychological inside of us all that causes a preference for “Autonomy”, rather than “Command & Control”. So, what levers do we need to pull in order to execute effectively? How will we deliver on the tasks & goals that are required? In what ways can we get team members to enrol, align, and participate in those challenges? And, how can we make efficient use of resources through strong time management and effective delegation?

This Workshop therefore takes an emotionally intelligent approach to personal & supervisory management. Our focus identifies core aspects, resources & skills that are essential for the contemporary challenges that face a new supervisor, manager or leader. Managing the Self is a great first step in managing resources, and then, managing people.

Course Objectives
Our intentions are to bootstrap core personal skills, so you can stand on your own two feet, start managing others with confidence, whilst simultaneously, inspiring your team members to also step up to deliver results alongside you.

You’ll traverse a broader perspective on management, consider the relevance of resources and the critical aspects in managing them. You’ll also practice simple coaching conversations, important communication elements that enable you to drive performance by giving and receiving feedback in much more harmonious ways.

Emotional intelligence sits well at the heart of this soft skills Workshop, as early stage managers come to understand it’s not just about themselves, others are vital to good execution and delivery too.

With a constant appetite for change, Patrick came to realise one very important thing; it’s the People that matter in With a constant appetite for change, Patrick came to realise one very important thing; it’s the People that matter in business, their personal development & growth counts.

His approach to learning is reflected in his facilitation during delivery; it focuses on building & strengthening an individual’s “soft skills”. This leads to Training that’s designed to scaffold on top of three firm foundations.

First, learning needs to be fun for it to stick; enjoyment & engagement are precursors to absorption & adoption. Next, it has to be sufficiently real to be relevant; it needs collaboration, openness, creativity, and, a little intensity. Finally, it must match Participant expectations to be valuable; it has to substantially deliver what it states “on the tin”.

Patrick therefore designs Workshop experiences that masterfully combine Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) with a deep Coaching mentality. Both are invitingly interlaced using Improvisational techniques. His diverse background and experience also allow him to facilitate inclusive and valuable learning moments. These are highly engaging, deeply empowering, and, thoroughly enjoyable.

His life’s journey has straddled different countries, continents & cultures, from Ireland and England, to New Zealand and Singapore. He’s worked his way through a variety of roles & levels in the corporate world, from Individual Contributor up to Managing Director. And, he has built considerable business experience whilst working across sectors such as government, technology, manufacturing, finance, consulting, aviation, telecommunications, and the Internet.

His formal education is well rounded: at Honours-level in IT, Masters-level in Marketing, and, an MBA in Finance. He is also a “Master Practitioner” of NLP, and an enthusiastic author with Articles appearing in the local media. In whatever form you experience his work, you’ll always feel his curiously cheerful sense of enjoyment; it just shines through.

Patrick is an active member of many international Professional bodies, such as the Chartered Management Institute, the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and the Institute of Directors. He is proud to be one of only a small handful of “Chartered Managers” in Asia.

With a warm Irish wit, a love of the “craic” and a big beaming smile, audiences in over twenty-five countries have found his disarmingly, unpretentious, and conversational approach to learning, to be a refreshing & rewarding experience.
